To create a wireless network, you need two essential components – a base station and a wireless local network connection.
The base station, or access point, acts as a hub that connects all computers in your wireless network, and it can also act as a bridge to a wired network.
Note
The base station can contain a 56 Kb v90 modem or a cable/DSL router, which provides Internet access. It can also provide IP addresses for the wireless computers on your wireless network.
The local network connection, which is installed on your computer, is the component that connects your machine to the wireless network by transmitting information via radio signals to the network base station or directly to the other computers.
There are several connection types you can use, including
· a wireless PCI card
· a wireless mini PCI card
· a USB wireless network adapter
· a wireless PC card
A wireless PCI card
Wireless PCI cards are used only for desktop PCs, as they won't fit into laptops. They are inserted inside the PC and contain a slot, accessed from the back of the PC, into which a PC card must be placed.
A wireless mini PCI card
Wireless mini PCI cards are designed for portable computers, where space is at a premium. They usually fit into the underside of the laptop.
A USB wireless network adapter
USB wireless network adapters, which sit outside of your PC or laptop, require a USB cable to plug into your computer.
A wireless PC card
Wireless PC cards are generally used with laptop computers. They are inserted into a PC card slot, which is usually on the side of a laptop or at the rear of a desktop.
2. Installing a base station
The base station acts as a hub that connects all the computers in your wireless network. The only physical installation required is to plug the station into a power point.
You should try to ensure that there are no concrete or metal obstructions between the base station and the computers on the network, as these could interfere with the network's radio signals.
The base station should also be mounted with the antennas positioned vertically. If the station is mounted on the ceiling, then the antennas should be pointing towards the floor.
